Empowering Parents Helps Parents Survive Summer Vacation

Articles on Backtalk and Anger Control Prove Popular with Readers

Westbrook, ME  While summer vacation is a time kids look forward to all year, it can be a time of high stress for parents. Children are home with plenty of time on their hands, which can lead to fighting with siblings, power struggles with parents, and defiant behavior. EmpoweringParents.com recently published two articles by James Lehman, MSW that help parents deal with the more challenging aspects of summer break. “Temper, Temper: How to Keep Your Cool When Kids Push Your Buttons” and “Sick of Backtalk? Here’s How to Stop it” have both set records for the magazine in terms of popularity and the number of times each was emailed to friends.

Elisabeth Wilkins is the Editor of EmpoweringParents.com. “Our Backtalk article was emailed to more than 500 people in 24 hours—a new record for us. Parents are writing in and saying, ‘Who says summer vacation is supposed to be fun?’ While summer break can be relaxing for many, when you’re in the middle of a months-long power struggle with your kids, it can be a challenge to maintain sanity. In Empowering Parents, we feature articles that give hands-on help to families by including effective techniques they can put into practice right away. We’ve become a safe place for parents to go to on the web to find answers to their questions about the toughest behaviors kids exhibit, from backtalk to temper tantrums, sibling rivalry to teens who are violent in the home. Parents come to us to find answers, and to find other people in the same situation with whom they can talk.”

The formula seems to be working, because in the one and half years the award-winning magazine has been online, it already has more then 135,000 readers.

Empowering Parents currently features a weekly newsletter, a blog that parents can join by becoming “Parent Bloggers,” online articles by child behavior experts, and interactive polls. Wilkins added that the next step for the site is to “get our forum going this month. This will encourage parents who are already reaching out to one another through insightful comments after each article and blog posts to talk with each other in greater depth about their particular parenting challenges.”
Empowering Parents is produced by Legacy Publishing Company and was created to provide useful problem-solving techniques for parents and children. Legacy Publishing is the company behind The Total Transformation and Total Focus Programs—two unique products that have been used by thousands of parents, teachers, coaches and other mentors of children to improve communication and modify problematic behaviors.

Director of National Center for Girls and Women with ADHD Releases Critical Analysis of Legacy Publishing’s ‘Total Transformation® Program’ for Child Behavior Management

WESTBROOK, Me., July 13, 2007—Dr. Patricia O. Quinn, MD, Director of the National Center for Girls and Women with ADHD has issued a Critical Analysis of Legacy Publishing’s “Total Transformation® Program.” Developed by behavioral therapist James Lehman, The Total Transformation® is a step-by-step system for parents and care givers to assist them in changing defiant or out-of-control behavior in children who may have ADHD and are “acting out.”

According to Dr. Quinn, ADHD remains the behavioral problem most often diagnosed by pediatricians. “Considering the negative prognosis, early identification and treatment of behavior and conduct problems in children and teens with ADHD cannot be overemphasized,” said Dr. Quinn.

Skills Training for Parents of Children with ADHD and ODD

During the course of her research on The Total Transformation® Program, Dr. Quinn observed, “While most pediatricians can say that they understand the need for multimodal therapy, that is, a cognitive therapy based program that may include medication for the treatment of children with ADHD and coexisting conditions, they are at a loss of how to assist parents in acquiring the skills necessary to carry out such a program. Most parents must ‘go it alone’ or seek out expensive mental health support within the community, knowing the majority of these services are not covered by health insurance.”

Dr. Quinn concluded, “Given the limited time available to clinicians to interact with patients and their parents, how can professionals teach parents to more effectively deal with their children with ADHD and ODD/CD and provide these services in a way that is both cost and time effective?  An “at home” training program like the TTP program seems ideal. Through a series of compact disks, DVDs and an interactive parent workbook, the TTP can be used by parents and professionals to decode a child’s behavior and understand why a child or teen is acting in a dysfunctional way. The main focus of this non-judgmental structured program is on teaching parents exactly how to react to and better understand their children or teens with behavior disorders such as ODD/CD and then effectively empower them to change.”

In response to this latest professional review of his child behavior program, James Lehman said, “We”re very excited about Dr. Quinn”s favorable analysis because it presents more evidence that The Total Transformation® is an effective way for parents to manage and change behavior problems with their children right in the home.“

The Total Transformation® Program is available through the Legacy Publishing Company, at www.thetotal transformation.com. Over 85,000 units of the TTP have been sold to date with about 1,000 currently being sold per week. In August 2006, the National Association of Social Workers approved the Total Transformation® Program for 6 continuing education units under the long-distance learning for social workers guidelines.

Chair of UC-Berkeley Psychology Department Endorses Legacy Parenting’s ‘ Total Focus Program’ for Behavior Management of Children with ADHD.

WESTBROOK, Me., July 13, 2007—Dr. Stephen Hinshaw, Chair of the UC-Berkeley Psychology Department, joined a growing list of supporters in the mental health community by officially endorsing the Total Focus Program for children with ADHD. Legacy Publishing Company’s Total Focus Program is a comprehensive child behavior program developed by Dr. Robert Myers for improving attention, concentration and self-control in children with attention and hyperactivity issues.

“I am most impressed with this program,“ said Dr. Hinshaw. “It incorporates a wealth of extremely helpful information and programming derived largely from evidence-based practice presented in a straightforward, user-friendly format for the families of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.”

The Total Focus Program promotes a multimodal approach for the treatment of children with ADHD. That is, it utilizes cognitive rehabilitation methods and cognitive-behavioral therapy that may be combined with ADD and ADHD medication. “Through various methods, including relaxation training, social skills training, and behaviorally-oriented parent management training, Total Focus encourages better behavior and social skills for children that have ADHD,”said Dr. Hinshaw. “These evidence-based strategies, particularly in combination with medication, have been shown in scientific literature to enhance overall functioning for the child with ADHD.”

Dr. Myers’ own son was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of six. “As a clinical psychologist, I’ve spent my life working with children with ADHD,” he said. “I believe that positive reinforcement is the key to improving behavior and performance in a child with attention and hyperactivity problems.”

Dr. Hinshaw added, “I believe that the Total Focus Program is extremely worthwhile, feeding as it does off recent data that documents the superiority of multimodal treatment for children and families with ADHD and issued at a time when professional organizations are issuing practical guidelines emphasizing the need for multimodal intervention.”

The Total Focus Program is available through Legacy Publishing Company, at www.TryTotalFocus.com.

Holding Down the Fort: U.S. Army Base Provides Legacy Parenting Company’s “Total Transformation Program” to Military Families

Step-by-step program helps parents manage the challenging behaviors of children and teens

WESTBROOK, ME. August 30—As U.S. soldiers’ deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan are extended repeatedly, stress for military families has reached an all-time high. According to the American Psychological Association, currently there are 700,000 children in the U.S. who have at least one deployed parent, and many have experienced a second, or even a third deployment. At Ft. Drum in Watertown, N.Y., Chaplain Keith Kilgore is attempting to help the military families under his care deal with child behavior problems more effectively by providing them with The Total Transformation® Program. The chaplain is using this step-by-step multimedia program developed by noted behavioral therapist James Lehman to help stay-behind parents manage the challenging behaviors of their children and teens.

“James Lehman’s teaching is helping my families a great deal,” said Chaplain Kilgore. “It gives parents something to fall back on, and stops them from being a drill sergeant for their kids. It gives them true parenting skills.” Initially, Kilgore ordered the program because “a lot of times you have single and dual army parents. When mom and dad are both deployed, children are left with relatives and caretakers that are much more lenient than their parents. Then, when parents come back, the kids are mad that they left them for so long, and they’ve also developed bad habits living with the other caretaker who may have been softer on them.”

Jennifer Watkins is a stay-behind parent of two boys, aged 15 and 10. She and her sons live in off-base housing near Ft. Dix in New Jersey. “After a visit from my husband, it takes at least a month for our family to readjust,” she said. “The kids get used to having us both there, and resent it when it’s just mom telling them what to do again. It’s almost impossible for me to restore order once my husband is gone.”

Compounding the problem, according to Kilgore, is the fact that when parents do come home, their children’s behavior can be less than desirable. “Basically, when mom and dad come back from war, there are problems. There’s a honeymoon period, then a lot of friction when parents have to reestablish discipline and hold kids’ feet to the fire. Sometimes the adjustment is not easy. The Total Transformation® Program was the answer to that.”

Steve Anderson, founder of Legacy Publishing Company, said, “We’re very pleased to be working with Chaplain Kilgore and the families at Fort Drum, NY. We hope our program can provide a better quality of life for military families, especially those deployed in the Middle East. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.”

So far, Kilgore says, “The feedback on the program has been tremendous. Everyone I’ve asked has said it’s been very helpful.” Additionally, “One female soldier here in a command position not only uses The Total Transformation® concepts at home, but also is using the strategies with some of her younger soldiers and it's working very well,” said Kilgore, who plans to order more programs for the families under his care.

The Total Transformation® Program is available through Legacy Publishing Company, at www.thetotaltransformation.com. Over 87,000 units of the TTP have been sold to date with about 1,000 currently being sold per week. In August 2006, the National Association of Social Workers approved The Total Transformation® Program for 6 continuing education units under the long-distance learning for social workers guidelines.
